The Developmental Relationships Framework grew out of focus groups with youth, parents, educators, youth workers, and others; a wide-ranging review of existing research; extensive analysis of existing data; and input from both scholars and practitioners. It also builds on Search Institute’s landmark research with more than 5 million youth on Developmental Assets— critical supports and strengths they need to thrive. Peter L. Benson, who created the asset framework, wrote:
After decades of forming hypotheses, conducting surveys, crafting and rewriting definitions, analyzing data, and writing journal articles, Search Institute researchers and practitioners have arrived at a surprisingly simple conclusion: nothing—nothing—has more impact in the life of a child than positive relationships.
This booklet introduces what we’re learning and provides some starting points for action by organizations and leaders dedicated to children and youth.
